NYCDOT was looking to improve transportation in the East Midtown district area during a rezoning initiative. KLD worked with URS/AECOM to conduct a comprehensive transportation study to identify which pedestrian improvement alternatives would be feasible, and the extent of the trade-offs in terms of capacity, congestion, and roadway traffic impacts.
KLD was responsible for collecting field observations, transit and tour bus data, and speed data, as well as conducting sidewalk crowding surveys and pedestrian LOS analyses as per CEQR using NYCDOT’s pedestrian LOS excel worksheets. KLD conducted an analysis on transit and tour buses within the study area and how the various alternatives could impact the interaction of transit and tour buses with pedestrians and bicyclists.
Starting with the Manhattan Traffic Model (MTM), KLD developed an Aimsun traffic simulation model of the study area to analyze the impacts of the various pedestrian improvements on roadway traffic. The model was calibrated and validated according to NYCDOT’s guidelines, then the future no build conditions model was developed following CEQR guidelines and the future build conditions model was developed. Outputs from the no-build and build models were compared to determine the impact of the various pedestrian improvements.
The deliverables included an existing conditions, future no-build and future build conditions Aimsun model, as well as formal reports documenting the pedestrian crowding and LOS analyses, the transit and tour bus analysis, and the traffic simulation analysis.
